Smart controls have been designed to support the home occupier’s growing desire to be able to manage heating controls remotely, as smart ‘phones become such a key part of most consumer’s lifestyles. Historically, you have had to pre-set heating and water commands in the property through the programmer, and, in the event of unexpected weather or activities, it has been impossible to alter settings unless you are physically back at the property. Smart technology has been designed to be managed through a WIFI enabled smart application to enable property settings to be changed and set up immediately from anywhere. This is really useful if, for example you get delayed commuting or the weather changes unexpectedly, as you can alter the heating and water settings remotely and be confident that you will arrive home to a suitably prepared property. Smart controls are managed via an application from any wi-fi enabled device and enable the user to re-programme the heating and water cycles at short notice. This is especially useful if you decide not to go straight home from work, or the weather changes, as you can instantly reset the programmes from your device. Not only does this manage your comfort, but also your property’s energy consumption as you can switch on or off, up or down your heating and water settings to suit external temperatures and lifestyle changes. There are a range of smart controls available, with various features and capabilities, from sensing your return via GPS through to switching to an away mode, when no one is home. Popular models such as Nest, Honeywell and Hive are readily available and are compatible with most makes of boiler. In addition to these controls, by 2020 all domestic properties will have a smart meter installed, sending energy usage data to our energy supplier, meaning no more inaccurate estimated bills and supporting the bill payer with managing their utility spend.

There is now also smart technology which, once installed, enables the occupier to heat certain sections of a property independently of each other. This is called zoning and is now a required feature under current building regulations. Existing heating systems can be adapted to enable a zoning facility, and this would need to be assessed and installed by a gas safe engineer and a qualified electrician. It works through a system of motorised valves and thermostats allowing the zones to be controlled by a smart application, depending on lifestyle requirements.

Zone control allows you to heat or cool only those areas of your home that require it, rather than the entire home. Therefore, greater comfort and convenience results, as well as potential energy savings up to 20%*

Wireless TRV

A TRV senses the room air temperature around it and adjusts the water flow in the radiator accordingly. They work independently from the boiler and enable the home occupier to set different room temperatures in the property, depending on requirements and lifestyle.

Smart technology has had a huge positive impact on home heating being managed more efficiently and the installation of wireless TRV’s, to support other technology, is a useful, cost effective addition to any system.

Alongside the smart controls, wireless TRV’s can also assist with managing required room temperatures, at short notice. These are supported via a mobile application, and enable the home occupier to adjust remotely the required temperature in each room where one is fitted. This can be especially useful in the event of a change in weather, or unexpected guests arriving! These can be especially useful in nurseries, or rooms where elderly people are spending time, as the heat can be managed easily from the wireless TRV. Quite often, it can be difficult to actually get access to a standard TRV when fitted on a radiator, due to either mobility or access issues around furniture etc and so often adjustment of the TRV’s is neglected. This obviously not only means that the room temperature is not as required, but also can waste expensive fuel, increasing energy costs unnecessarily.
